Haute days of summer

Sew, you want to have some fashion fun

The Newsweekly

New York isn?t the only place turning out hot, new designers. This past week, a group of Vero Beach?s young talent was stitching up their haute collections at Fashion Sewing Camp held at Create at Studio M.A.

Studio owner Martha Ann Sloane gave her students quite the challenge: design and create two outfits along with accessories in only four days -- a task that may even make the contestants on Project Runway shake in their boots.

?A prerequisite to the camp was that these girls had to have sewing experience. They all are students of my after school sewing class,? explains Sloane, who has been has been teaching children for years and holding classes in her Studio since 2011.

She obviously knows how to bring out people?s inner creativity, judging by the works of art decorating the walls of her studio and the very stylish outfits the young fashionistas walked down the runway at the camp?s finale.

?Oh?s? and ?ah?s? muffled the music as the designers presented their first creations: colorful sundresses. Each dress displayed the seamstress? choice of hem length and style of shoulder strap. To complement the look, the young women accessorized with bright flip flops decorated with a wide array of ribbons, trimmings and even balloons.

After a quick change, the girls walked the runway in ensembles that truly captured their personalities. The outfits consisted of unique t-shirts and tiered skirts, each adorably embellished with dog appliques, flamingos and even cupcakes, along with decorative stitching and rickrack.

?It?s so much fun to make your own creations,? said Lila Legler, designer of the very yummy ?I Love Cupcakes? collection.

?I feel good about creating something and I got to use decorative stitches,? said Kailee Webster as she showed the detail in her charming?I Love Dogs? collection.

Designer Grace Murphy has created more than just her sunny ?Flamingo & Hearts? collection, which include decorative hand stitching. ?I make pillows and other clothes,? she explained.
